The day started off early for Sean, Ethan & Karl. I awoke Sean at 5:45 so he could get up to get ready for his trip to the french side. Karl, Ethan & Sean were heading there to look for fresh lobster. I fell back to sleep, but awoke to knocking at the door at 7:45, Liana had managed to lock herself outside the room, something that is very easy to do when the patio doors are open as well. We waited until almost 9 before the guys got back with their catch, 3 fantastic looking spiny lobsters…mmmmmmm.

Liana and I then had Karl & Sean telling us about how hard of a time they had talking with the people on the french side, very few people understood or even spoke english! Ethan took the lobster over to the other hotel room to be put in the fridge since ours was malfunctioning, and full. We then proceeded to pack up our stuff to head to Orient Bay, another beach on the french side that we were told was one of the best. Getting there was an interesting ride for all but Sean who had already been around the island several times.
When we got there, we found that Orient Bay was much more commercialized, with several sections of the beach area set aside for restaurant/bars that sold use of the lounge chairs and umbrellas, for a mear 5 euros for the umbrella, and 8 euros for a chair (converting that to US dollors, $7.5 for the umbrella, and $12 for a chair). Luckily, Sean and I had packed our beach blankets and we instead used those, though we didn’t exactly sit on the beach for very long. The beach was a beautiful white sandy beach, with perfect waves for body surfing. We stayed there for about 3 hours before we decided to pack up to head back to the motel to have lunch consisting of hot dogs and alcoholic beverages
Afterwards we went down to the pool to enjoy some quiet time and relaxation in the shade. The pool at the hotel is quite large, and salt water, like the pool we had setup this summer, so much more pleasant when you get it in your mouth compared to the ocean water. Around 5 we decided to head up to prep dinner…the 3 lobsters and 2 lbs of very large shrimp, what we would consider tiger prawns.
Sean was elected to be the lobster cleaner/killer. But first, he had to get rubber gloves to protect his hands from the spiny-ness of the lobsters. Down to the front office he went, where he talked with Framke, the Dutch exchange student who is here for 7 months to do her practicum training in tourism. So you can imagine how good her english was! Apparently the word “glove” is not an english word that they teach them because Sean had a very hard time trying to get her to understand what he wanted. Luckily another worker native to St. Maarten knew what he was talking about and got him a pair. So back to the room he went to declare, “Off with their heads!” (speaking of the lobster of course!) While being videotaped by myself and Liana, Sean proceeded to rip off the heads of the lobster with great fanfare, declaring victory over the lobster! The next step was to de-gut the tail of the lobster which we won’t go in to details about, it’s rather disturbing what is done!
With the lobster prepped, and shrimp spread out on a pan, we went down to the bbq area to cook the suckers. Of course no one had brought a camera, and Liana couldn’t figure out how to get her video camera to take a picture in the dark, so back I went up 5 flights of stairs, 2 at a time to get our camera ( and yes…thank god for bootcamp at that moment, I wouldn’t have made it otherwise! hi Sue! ) We took several pictures of the fantastic looking lobster and shrimp as they cooked on the bbq, until the time we had to go upstairs. And I have to admit, as I carried the plate of lobster up the stairs, it was very hard not to just sit and eat them all!

We had dinner at Bruce & Maria’s villa out on the patio, listening the crickets, and the waves hitting the shore. What a glorious dinner it was! The feast was enjoyed by all, and rather quickly too! I don’t think we’ve been that quiet the entire time! With cleanup out of the way we headed back to our room for an evening of Mamma Mia! Yes, I have now seen it 5 times, and I’m getting really good at singing every single song, word for word, and Sean’s getting there too
For dessert, I splurged and shared my Purdy’s Peanut Butter Fingers (yes Michelle….*those* peanut butter fingers!!).
And now here Sean and I sit, back down at the pool with the wireless connection, enjoying a warm breeze on clear starlit night. What more could we ask for! (more suntan lotion!!!!!!)
Okay, so I forgot to mention that part….remember the title “or is that looking like lobsters”, well, we’re all just a tad red now after 2 full days in the sun, and we still have 12 more days to go. Not sure what color you go after red, is it maroon? purple? or is it black, as in burnt, like toast?!
